Color-rific days at Leyden Glen Farm
Hello Friends of Leyden Glen Lamb…..
Oh my - it is peak color here at Leyden Glen Farm. Isn’t it gorgeous?
Farmer Mark is still making hay. It never seems to end. There are still several fields to go for their third cutting of the year. We shall see if the weather cooperates and he can finish them all. Besides feeding our sheep, we provide several other farms with winter hay for their cows and sheep. Many of you ask why he isn’t at the market anymore and my answer is “he’s haying.” From May til October you’ll find him on his tractor cutting, tedding, raking, baling and wrapping.
It’s going to be a beautiful day tomorrow so I hope I will see lots of smiling faces at the Amherst Farmers Market. I’ll be there from 8 to 1:30 with all the usual cuts of lamb (and some new pottery and tea towels).
We took our last batch of lambs for the year to the processor. I’ve ordered several bone-in legs for holiday meals along with boneless half legs. Now is the time for you to speak up if you would like one of these stunning roasts for your holiday celebrations. They will be ready for pick up at the end of October.
I think I’ve told you that we have a new Border Collie named Annie. She is just over a year old now and Mark has been begun working with her with the sheep. This is a 1:36 minute video of one of the early “training” sessions from a month ago. It isn’t pretty but you can see her talent and interest. I’ll try to share some videos as her skills improve. She has a very long way to go! Border Collies generally don’t mature in their skills until they are 3 years old or so. She is our 6th Border Collie - beginning with Paisley, Devon, Ness, Phoebe, Kate and now Annie! They all have been amazing workers and companions.
It’s autumn officially now and it’s time for some of our favorite braises and stews. This is a fantastic Lamb, Apricot, Raisin and Almond Tagine. Yum! Here’s the recipe.
We won’t be at the Amherst Farmers Market NEXT WEEK October 19th. My Mom Nancy is turning 90 and we will be away celebrating her.
Hope to see some of you tomorrow!
Your in good, local food……
