Summer's End - Celebrate with Some Delicious Lamb
Hello Friends of Leyden Glen Lamb:
This weekend marks the end of the “summer” season. Kids are going back to school and you can feel the summer season turning to autumn. It’s time to get back to school, work and to real life. The sheep and lambs are relieved that the hot weather has subsided. They have been out on pasture since late spring. There is still plenty of grass for them to eat.
For the past few summers, some of our sheep have been grazing Town of Bernardston land. Down the hill from our barns, there is a large swath of grass that the town owns. Mark approached the Select Board to see if they might let him put some sheep there to graze the land. They agreed to a test. He set up the electronet fence and moved the sheep in. The neighbors love watching the sheep and the town saved some money on gas, labor and got some free fertilizer. The photo above is the group of sheep there when they first arrived.
We’ll be at the Amherst Farmers Market tomorrow from 8-1:30. Please stop by and pick up some of our delicious lamb for your Labor Day holiday. We’ve got plenty of stock on all our regular cuts.
Here’s an interesting recipe to try - Grilled Pitas Stuffed with Lamb. You mix up some spices with ground lamb and then spread the mixture inside pita bread. Throw it on the grill for a short time and serve it with some yogurt sauce. I’m always looking for new ways for a quick dinner. These would also be great little appetizer bites if you cut them up into pizza like slices.
Hope to see you tomorrow at the market! It is supposed to be a beautiful day.
I’ll also have lots of new colorful pieces of my pottery and plenty of tea towels.
Your shepherds,
Mark and Kristin
