Hello Lamb Friends:
Looks like it may be another rainy weekend here in western Massachusetts. We will be at the Amherst Farmers Market tomorrow rain or shine. It looks like it may not shower until later in the day so I will keep my fingers crossed. Would love to see any of you who read this newsletter. I’ll be under the pink tent near the parking lot with our farm raised lamb, my pottery and tea towels.
Next weekend (June 7th), we will not be at the market so plan ahead if you need some lamb. Look for the pink tent.
This week, our new MDAR Farm Viability Grant Funded Livestock Trailer got its first test. It’s time to move the sheep out onto pastures near and far. We weren’t sure how it would go loading the sheep because they are cautious of any change. The ewes jumped up quickly and took their first ride to a beautiful pasture where they will spend the next several months. If all goes well and the grass keeps growing, they will be there until late October.
Here’s a short video of the yearling ewes unloading and finding the lush green grass. These ewes are last year’s lambs. They are about 16 months old. They aren’t fully grown quite yet. Most of them will be first time mamas next year although if you looked closely, there was one lamb in the group along with its mama who lambed this year. The trailer will never be this sparkly again. I miscounted - 22 ewes plus one lamb! We will add another batch of 20 or so to this group.
This week on the farm, it’s been busy. We’ve been enjoying lamb burgers cooked on the grill for some quick weeknight meals. Check out our new website for a couple different lamb burger ideas that are really quick and super delicious:
Lamb Burgers with Feta Cheese and Olives
Greek Flavored Lamb Burgers with Yogurt Sauce
Hope to see some of you tomorrow at the Amherst Farmers Market from 8 to 1:30.
And because it is spring here at Leyden Glen Farm, here’s a little kitten that I found hiding in a box. It is 4 weeks old and growing fast.
Your Shepherds,
Mark and Kristin
